I am an incoming professor at the Université de Montréal with Fall 2027 vacancies in my stars and planets research group for MSc students. In this role, you would also be part of the Institute for Research on Exoplanets (IREx), Canada’s largest community of exoplanet scientists.

The ideal candidate should:

• Be excited to conduct interdisciplinary research. Students in my group work at the intersection of stellar astrophysics and exoplanet science, and some projects also dabble in chemistry, computer science, geology, and biology.
• Be comfortable programming in Python. Your day-to-day research tasks will involve coding to analyze astronomical data sets.
• Speak French, or be committed to learning. The Université de Montréal is a francophone institution, and IREx’s workplace languages are French and English. While there are some anglophone-only students in the department, social and professional opportunities often require proficiency in both languages.
• Have a BSc in Physics or a related field and meet the requirements for admission into a Université de Montréal MSc program (minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.3 on the UdeM scale, or the equivalent for your undergraduate institution).

If you have not yet had the opportunity to conduct a research project, this sample can be something you did for a relevant class. Past research experience is not a prerequisite, and all interested students are encouraged to apply. We all come to the field from our own path and your unique experiences and diverse perspectives are valued.

Deadline and funding

While candidates will be considered until the vacancy is filled, expressions of interest received before November 10 will receive full consideration.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents should also plan to submit an application for the NSERC Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s Program, which offers an increased funding level for one year. The deadline for this application is December 1.

In the absence of an external fellowship, the position will be funded following the standard funding policy of the Université de Montréal Physics department. For Fall 2027, this annual stipend is $22,880.

Please also note the Université de Montréal 2e cycle (i.e., MSc) tuition rates, which vary depending on your current location of residence. Tuition reduction scholarships are available for international students. Additional scholarships are available through IREx.
